"That face is forever burned into my memory. I just hope to see it up close one last time."

Title: Scorn #1 "Obsessed"
Publisher: Septagon Studios
Creative: Kevin Moyers (words) and Philipp Neundorf (art)

The Lowdown: Michael's life has been shite since the day he was born. Literally - he lost his mother to a random act of gun violence that day. He grew up awkward, alone and unable to connect with those around him while also suffering from nightmares about the loss of the mother he never got to know. His visions of her are forever changing as his mind works to add some semblance of sense to the senseless.

The one redeeming item to Michael's life is the one friend he managed to make and keep in his youth, Glenn. But as the two grow to adulthood together, even becoming roommates in their first apartment, Michael once again experiences horror and loss as Glenn too is taken from him by another bullet.

With nothing left, Michael becomes obsessed with destroying those who took Glenn from him - something he was never able to do with those who took his mother. Only when he begins to do what he feels he must, he quickly discovers that when it rains it pours, and he may have taken on too much too soon.

The Opinion: Having followed Septagon Studios' production of this series since its initial announcement a couple of years back, I was admittedly concerned that, with so much time having passed between that first hype session and the actual release, Scorn might have too much to live up to. I was wrong, and the book is quite a solid piece of work on the part of all involved.

Kevin Moyers is telling the oft-used classic revenge tale with an urban, action flick style and a fresh, ambitious voice. This is a project he's had in his head for years and it shows, as he seems very much at home within the material. This is complimented by Philipp Neundorf's unique art style - with an almost graphitti-like linework, textured to the point that it doesn't even look like this was done on paper, but rather walls and other surfaces.

If I had to nitpick anything, it would be the choice of fonts on sound effects and things of the sort. They're very common. Which is fine, except when used over art that is anything but common. Still, if I'm resorting to being critical of type-faces, it's safe to say there isn't much wrong with Scorn.
